  The End

  Acknowledgments

Special thanks are due my agent, Paula Munier, whom I first met at a writers’ group she held in her home some years ago. She has supported me through more rewrites than I care to remember, and has the gift of saying something won’t work without hurting my feelings while directing me to something that will. My thanks go also to Terri Bischoff, my editor at Midnight Ink, for valuable suggestions that gave the Pioneer Valley series a strong start. Sandy Sullivan and Melissa Mierva made a meticulous review of the manuscript, saving me from many blunders.

Over the years my family and I have worked with a number of foresters and loggers on our property, and each one has taught me something valuable about forestry and land management. Their dedication and stewardship always proved invaluable, and I’m grateful to them for their willingness to share their expertise.

Every writer has at least one friend who faithfully listens to sometimes incomprehensible ruminations on plot or character or methods of murder. I’m fortunate to have several who listened and also read earlier versions of this book. Skye Alexander, Danuta Borchardt, Elenita Lodge, and Leslie Wheeler read some or all of the manuscript and offered suggestions as well as insightful criticisms. I’m grateful for their feedback as well as their friendwship.

Every day I’m aware of how fortunate I am to have the love and support of my husband, Michael, who has encouraged my forays into fiction from the beginning.

As always, despite all the assistance I have received over the years, any errors or omissions are entirely mine.
